that special 5am air

There’s something special about the early mornings. The lighting, the air, the whole atmosphere feels different, more special.

Maybe it’s the liminal spaces effect, where the lack of people makes the world around us feel strange and alien.

Or maybe it’s the temporal proximity to our dream state and the morning grogginess.

Maybe it’s the decades of propaganda from our capitalist overlords in effect, our subconcious finally getting the validation it craves to convince us we’re hard workers - and therefore of course, good people.

Maybe it’s a combination of all these things, or maybe it’s just me.

My wife and I have been waking up at 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning to go on bike rides. We’re taking it easy for now, or at least I am, with my fancy, smooth trek verve 3 and she’s toiling away with her inherited schwinn bike with broken gears and unmaintened, high-friction chain. We bike around 30-50 minutes each day, and at a sluggish 8 mph pace. We are seriously considering getting her a new bicycle. Perhaps a nice electric one so she can keep pace with me, and maybe even join me on one of my longer ventures. I do think my sweet spot is 12-15mph and at least a 1.5 hour ride for it to scratch the itch.

It does feel magical when we’re out there in the real early mornings.

I’ve never really been a night owl or a early bird. As long as I get to bed on time to get enough sleep, I can adapt to it all.

Regardless,

Stay lazy night owls, fight the good fight. Don’t let them win.
